Daniel's Den

"Your Word Have I Hidden in My Heart."

Traffic was "snarly," and it began to rain. Enduring the dreary trip, with the load of the day on my mind, I arrived at the store and went to the bank counter.

I stood in plain sight of the bank counter, but no one was there! I checked my watch. There was still an hour before bank closing for the day. Where was everyone? I was the only one there!

After several long minutes, a young lady finally appeared, coming through an employee door. Her eyes were reddened; her cheeks were flushed pink. She had been crying.

If I had known her, I would have asked about her troubles, and maybe I could have helped her with her struggles. In the present case, it was not appropriate. This was not a meeting of friends, nor was this to be a therapy session. It was a banking transaction.

Still, I wanted to help. I wanted to help lift her load in some way. I wanted her day to end well. Two Bible verses came to mind, and I "went for it!"

I forgot about my weariness, fears, and burdens of the day, and I smiled at her, and spoke lightheartedly, "Well, you get to take all of my money today; I just need deposit slips." I then commented about the upcoming Super Bowl game, a poster of which was on the wall.

A wonderful thing happened. She smiled back (discreetly sniffling a couple of times), and responded with lighthearted comments of her own. For that brief time, both of our burdens were lifted. I discovered again that God’s Word really works. Practicing God’s Word changes lives: your own, as well as those you encounter.

What were my two verses? "Love is kind." (I Cor. 13:4) and "A merry heart does good, like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones." (Pro. 17:22)

Praise God, for His life-giving Word! Share it this week with those you meet.

It had been a mentally-exhausting day! It was supposed to be my day off; it was anything but! By the time I had gotten around to do my personal banking, the day was far spent. Darkness had fallen. My bank has a branch at our local grocery store, so that’s where I went.
