Spring Lesson

This past week, around my birthday, we were having a brief respite from winter, as the warm winds created fog, blowing over snowfields, melting the snow cover, and as the rains collected on frozen ground, refilling the swales that had become the basins for our ice ponds.
The final touch to this “breath of spring” was the flight of a pair of robins into my bare apple tree. They had completed their 1,500-mile journey from Mexico. They would not have taken such an arduous flight, unless they had known that spring was near.
(I am fully aware, as of this writing, that the weatherman has predicted 3”+ of snow by Friday, a snow event that is supposed to continue through Sunday. Robins, be patient. This is only a temporary setback!)
God has planted so many spiritual messages on this earth of His, that it makes one look in awe and wonder! The cold season of deadness is giving way to the warm season of life! Does this message sound familiar? It should. The message of the cross did not end with the apparent defeat of death.

A small seed becoming a towering tree. A thin stalk pushing back the earth. A rainbow arching in the midst of a thundercloud. … “God’s testimony,” wrote David, “makes wise the simple.” (Psa. 19:7)
God’s testimony. When was the last time you witnessed it? A stroll through knee-high grass in a green meadow. An hour listening to seagulls or looking at seashells on the beach. Or witnessing the shafts of sunlight brighten the snow on a crisp winter dawn. …
There comes a time when we should lay down our pens and commentaries and step out of our offices and libraries. To really understand and believe in the miracle on the cross, we’d do well to witness God’s miracles every day.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork.” (Psa. 19:1) Spring reminds us once again that death is not the final state of life. God planted that message here!
